When Energy Moves Backwards: Reversed Polarity, Rebellious Qi, and Channel Chaos

One of the most overlooked—but critical—aspects of energy medicine and bodywork is polarity. If your treatments aren’t landing the way they should—if your client feels worse instead of better—this could be the hidden factor.
Let’s explore what reversed polarity, rebellious Qi, and channel chaos really mean… and how to work with them effectively in your practice.
What is Polarity?
In simple terms, polarity is the natural direction of energy flow in the body. Like a magnet has a north and south pole, our energetic system has built-in directional patterns. When these patterns are disrupted, symptoms arise—and treatments can produce unexpected or even opposite results.
In Traditional East Asian Medicine and energy work, this disruption is sometimes called:
-
Rebellious Qi
-
Liver Yang Rising
-
Channel Chaos
In my Qi Hacking course, we call it what it feels like: when Qi flows the wrong way.
Yin and Yang Have Direction
Understanding polarity starts with understanding the directional flow of Yin and Yang:
-
Yin energy moves from the Earth upward to Heaven
-
Yang energy moves from Heaven downward to Earth
This isn’t just poetic—it’s practical. When this energetic movement reverses, symptoms show up in the physical, mental, and emotional body.
If you visualize the human body in the anatomical position (standing upright with arms overhead), it becomes even clearer how energy is meant to rise and fall.
Signs of Reversed Polarity or Channel Chaos
When polarity is reversed or Qi becomes rebellious, you may observe:
-
Treatments or medications having the reverse effect
-
Clients unable to resolve persistent symptoms
-
Mental fog, headaches, fatigue, or confusion
-
A heavy feeling in the limbs or head
-
Burping, hiccups, or pain in the hypochondrial (side rib) area
These are classic signs that Qi is not flowing in the proper direction—and it’s time to correct polarity before continuing treatment.
How to Test and Rebalance Polarity
Testing polarity is quick and simple. (If you're new to this, I share a video on this inside my course.)
When polarity is off, here are some rebalancing techniques:
-
Figure-8 movements on the palms and soles – gentle and effective
-
Acupoint stimulation or tapping
-
Grounding through breath and posture
-
Qi Gong for regulation and flow (also included in the course)
These approaches help recalibrate the directional flow of Qi, restoring clarity, vitality, and receptivity to treatment.
Why This Matters in Clinical Practice
You may have the perfect approach, the best tools, and all the right protocols—but if polarity is reversed, nothing will work the way it’s supposed to. Treatments will either stall or cause unpredictable effects.
Qi Hacking is all about working with these subtle yet powerful energetic shifts to increase your clinical effectiveness—and feel more grounded in your own body at the same time.
