An area of interest - DU 14 and its impact on wind heat

First lets try to understand the terminology...

Wind heat in East Asian Medicine tends to apply to the earlier stages of a pathogen entering the body, where the bodys immune response kicks in, showing signs such as a fever, sore throat, yellow phlegm. The pores are open and the body is susceptible to pathogens.

Wind is one of the five climates, the other four are hot, cold, damp, and dry.  Each of the five climates has a corresponding element, as does everything in the 5 Element system. Wind can be external or internal, and can pass from an external pathogen to an internal pathogen if not treated carefully.  Internal wind is associated with many chronic and degenerative conditions.

DU 14 is an important acupoint for releasing the exterior (pathogens) and to treat wind-heat.

It is a powerful point and can also be used to tonify using a much gentler approach to the point to help balance the yang and close the pores..  DU 14

Location: at the base of the cervical spine, in the depression below C7

Indications: febrile disease, malaria, night sweats, aversion to cold, epilepsy, cough and more...

Starting gua sha at this point to induce or release heat from the interior is an extraordinarily effective way to treat interior wind-heat.

As always in Gua Sha, the treatment should begin at the centre, and most superior area and strokes move laterally. Work from the point, out along the Trapezius muscle until the change in tissue has stabilized, and move on to the next area, working over the entire upper thoracic area, and then moving toward the shoulder and arm treatment

This area is also effective to treat a stiff neck, particularly when the client wakes with it, for no known reason.
