Contraindications and Cautions for Gua Sha

There are several contraindications and cautions for Gua Sha.  Knowing these limitations will keep your treatmetns safe and effective.

There are some contraindications for gua sha that are similar to cupping, which are included below:

LOCAL CONTRAINDICATION

  1. Skin wounds, including blisters, sunburn, warts, moles, pimples, acne, open sores and cuts, shingles, rashes, herpes outbreaks (near them, not on them)
  2. Geriatric patients (loose skin, thin skin, tear and bruise easily).
  3. Weak patients or those who have been very ill
  4. Patients who has difficulty healing wounds (i.e. immunocompromised)
  5. Pregnancy (contraindicated over the abdomen, and lower back)
  6. Recent injury where there is bruising or abraision (cupping or gua sha marks arecontraindicated until the marks have healed

CAUTION

1. Gua Sha should be applied cautiously on deficient patients or not at all.  Gua Sha is indicated for most cases of deficiency, and discretion should be used.

2. Gua Sha should not be performed if Cupping or Gua Sha has recently been applied, and there is residual petechia (marks)

3. Although there is concern with transmission of bloodborne pathogens, Gua Sha is not contraindicated for diabetes, or those taking blood thinners.  Practitioners should observe the reaction of ecchymosis and petechia and proceed accordingly.
