Self Cultivation Week 2 - Direction of Energy
One of the most overlooked aspects of energy work that can have a massive impact on our treatments - and the overall condition of our health is the direction of energy (Qi) flow, also known as polarity.
What is polarity?
Polarity is the natural direction of energy flow.
Polarity Testing and Correction
If you are not getting the expected results in your treatments, it is possible that you or your clients polarity is off.
Testing polarity is very quick and easy (see muscle testing video attached)
If polarity is off there are a few ways to rebalance it (see muscle testing video)
For clients, making figure 8s on the palms and soles is the least disruptive method.
Signs of Incorrect Energy Flow
The signs of reverse polarity, rebellious Qi, Yang Rising or Channel Chaos
- Treatments and/or medications having the reverse effect
- Unable to resolve symptoms
- Mental fog / headaches / fatigue / confusion
- Heaviness in any body area
- Burping, Hiccoughs, Hypochondrial pain
Reverse Energy Flow
Energy is meant to flow in specific directions. Just like a magnet has a north and south pole, our own energy systems have similar directions of flow.
Yin Energy travels from the Earth upward to Heaven.
Yang Energy travels from Heaven downward to Earth
When understanding this flow, it is helpful to observe the human body in the anatomical position (arms over head)
Reverse flow energy can be called:
Rebellious Qi
Liver Yang Rising
Channel Chaos
Polarity and Channel Chaos considered a more esoteric approach
Often not a major focus of EAM training, outside of rebellious Qi and Yang Rising
Classical teachers have a greater tendency to talk about it, it has been mostly stripped from TCM training
Wang Ju Yi – Applied Channel Theory - believed that Channel Chaos is one of the biggest problems in modern society. It can be diagnosed through the pulse (more than three pulse patterns emerging or organ disharmony patterns)
Caused by EMF, and stress on the organs
Once I learned about it from my classical teachers, and started treating it outcomes changed drastically.
Causes of Reverse Energy Flow
- Stress to an organ/system
- - over eating, over drinking causing stagnation or depletion of a system, inflammation
- Dehydration
- - causing mineral deficiency, lack of nutrition to the cells
- Sudden shock to the system
- - death or loss of loved one, emotional upheaval
- Disruption of circadian rhythm
- - night shifts, extended travel
- Energetic Interference
- - EMF exposure
Consequences of Reverse Energy Flow
- Immune System Dysfunction – autoimmune disease, cancer
- Emotional Distress – anxiety depression, irritability
- Sleep Disruption – insomnia, day sleeping
- Digestive or Msk problems – pain and distention
- Inability to recover from injury
- Treatments not working, having reverse effect
Reverse Flow Qi and Yang
Reverse Flow Qi or Rebellious Qi
Rebellious Lung Qi – manifests as coughing, wheezing, vomiting
Rebellious Stomach Qi – manifests as nausea, vomiting, hiccups, belching, acid reflux
Rebellious Spleen Qi – manifests as diahhrea, and long term can be prolapse
Liver Yang Rising - manifests as red face, red eyes, angry outburst, heat in the head, headache, tinnitus, insomnia, dream filled sleep
*Each of these we will cover under their respective element
Treating Reverse Flow of Energy
-Tapping sequences
-Energy continuum on ends of channels
-LI 4 and LV 3
Preventing and maintaining correct energy flow
-Microcosmic Orbit meditation
-Regular meridian exercise / Qi Gong, EMF and other influences
-Managing/monitoring exposure to radiation
-Checking and correcting polarity frequently
-If you find reverse polarity on someone, it could be a short-lived thing, but its usually a good idea to continue to test it, as if it is a longer-term issue it will tend to recur

I felt some tingling on the top of my head as well. What does that mean?
And if I test with right hand, I go forward with pam down, and don't move with palm up. So is my polarity only half off? 😉
