Applying the 10 Questions to the Intake

Using the 10 Questions in our Intake

  1.  PAIN

Indications  Concerns

Excess

Stabbing pain    Blood Stasis  Meridian level treat, Organ level – poss CI

  can be severe

 

Deep pain  Kidney Yang Deficiency Location, accompanied with cold – apply heat or   gentle friction treatment often fatigue and weakness, mind pressure

Burning pain  Fire Element heat or stasis  - Meridian level treat gently, Organ level can   be area of concern. Meridian can be effectively treated 

Sharp pain    Blood Stasis, shock(SI mer) – Meridian level assess, can be effectively   treated, organ level poss CI

Moving pain  Liver Qi Stagnation (excess or combination) with Dampness

  usually not emergent but can be difficult

 

Cramping  LV Qi Stg or Blood Stasis

  usually not emergent, but can be difficult to treat

 

Deficient

Deep pain  Kidney Yang Deficiency

  can be systemic and have long recover requiring lifestyle changes

Dull pain  Qi Deficiency, Kidney Yang Deficiency

  can be systemic and have long recover requiring lifestyle changes

Moving pain  Liver Qi Stagnation (excess or combination)

  Running Piglet Qi (deficiency LV and/or KD)

  indicates Wind pathology, possible dampness, multiple pathology   requiring extended treatment and lifestyle changes (psychology)

Cramping  LV Qi or Blood Stasis – often due underlying heat and dryness   chronic cramping most effectively treated with herbal medicine

Numbness/Tingling  Qi / Blood Deficiency with possible stasis. Assess for severity

  1. URINE | STOOL

Indications  Concerns

Bowel Motility

Constipation  LV Qi Stg, Qi deficiency, Dryness due to metal or kidney weakness

  heat in fire element or wood

Diahrrea  Spleen Qi deficiency, cold with indigested food, damp heat with   explosive diahhrea, LV Qi Stg with alternating constipation and     diahrrea

Urination

Frequent  Clear, incontinence, KD Yang Def with cold,  KD Qi nighttime   urination, LV heat or Stg can affect Bladder muscles, dampness

Urgency  KD Yin deficiency

Urinary Tract Infections  Spleen dampness, damp heat

Painful  Damp Heat, Bladder issues

 

  1. THIRST | APPETITE | TASTE

Indications  Concerns

Thirst  heat, fever, Yin Deficiency

No Thirst  Blood deficiency, Yang Deficiency, pathogenic cold

Big Appetite  Sp Qi Deficiency, St Fire, LV Qi Stagnation

No Appetite  Sp Qi Deficiency, St issues, LV Qi Stagnation

Eating at certain times  refer to Chinese organ clock

Pungent  Metal

Sweet  Earth

Sour  Fire

Salty  Water

Bitter  Woodchinese clock

 

  1. Sleep

Sleep times and waking times refer to clock

Waking Early  Metal

Dream filled sleep    Earth

Insomnia, restless  Fire

Nocturnal Emissions  Water

Nightmares   Wood

 

 

  1. Thorax / Abdomen

Discomfort | Pain

Type of pain     deep, dull. moving, cramping, stabbing, numbness, burning   sharp 

Time of day  check organ clock

Location  connect with organs,

  tissues, lymph etc

Relieved by  heat, cold, pressure, eating

  fasting, bowel movement

Triggered by  heat, cold, pressure, eating

  certain foods, drinking

  movement

 

  1. Gyneological

At what age did period start?  Early start can lead to BL def early menopause

Length of cycle? 2 Length of actual period  short cycle - deficiency

Colour of Blood? Clots?  Dark is Stasis

Changes over time?  After children, stress, ageing

Symptoms occur: before during after  deficient, stasis

Symptoms: Pain type:   identify pattern

Location (back, abdomen, legs head etc)

Pressure  deficient relieved, excess exacerbated with

Emotions, Headaches, Focus,   type of emotion, H/A, brain fog = Earth etc
