Mobilizing the channel as opposed to applying acupuncture
Although applying acupuncture the confluent points for the Du Mai and Ren Mai can be very effective in stimulating and supporting the system, it does not have the same impact as working directly on the energy system.
There are several ways to mobilize the Du Mai system, in Touching Qi we will be working on the following 3 Methods:
- gentle and rhythmic rocking of the body
- working on the sides of the spine, between the spinous process of the vertebrae to release local tension
- tapping in to the microcosmic orbit rhythm ( similar to the cranial rhythm)
Most TCM acupuncturists do not have an in depth understanding of the Extraordinary Vessels, especially the relevance of the Du Mai and Ren Mai channels.
Why is the Du Mai overlooked?
My theory is that when TCM was re-invented as a modern disease treatment model during the cultural revolution in China, it was focused on becoming part of the mainstream medical system.
Energy medicine and bodywork practices were set aside, and considered a ‘lower level’ of intellectual expertise. Still to this day, many intellectuals who practice TCM look down upon these practices as ‘lesser than’ Chinese Herbal Medicine.
Meanwhile in Japan, bodywork practices and acupuncture were grouped together while herbal medicine was in its own category altogether. For this reason, you see many more Japanese style acupuncturists practicing meridian therapy, bone setting, and energy work.
